About Dr. Abou-Samra

Abdullah Abou-Samra, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in the medical and surgical management of diseases affecting the retina, macula, and vitreous.

Dr. Abou-Samra has deep roots in the Tampa Bay area. He completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of South Florida before completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia. He then pursued advanced subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery through The Retina Group of Washington in affiliation with Georgetown University and MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

His fellowship training provided extensive exposure to both common and highly complex retinal disease, including retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, macular disorders, retinal vascular disease, vitreous hemorrhage, and complicated vitreoretinal surgical cases.

Dr. Abou-Samra provides comprehensive treatment for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, retinal vein occlusions, vitreous hemorrhage, posterior vitreous detachment, and other diseases of the retina and vitreous. Treatments include intravitreal injections, retinal laser therapy, pneumatic retinopexy, vitrectomy, scleral buckle surgery, and complex retinal detachment repair.

In addition to his clinical and surgical training, Dr. Abou-Samra has participated in ophthalmic research, including research involving emerging treatments for geographic atrophy associated with age-related macular degeneration. He has also been involved in physician advocacy efforts focused on issues affecting ophthalmology and specialty medicine.

Dr. Abou-Samra is committed to combining advanced retinal and surgical care with thoughtful communication and careful explanation of treatment options. His goal is to ensure patients understand their condition and feel confident in the decisions surrounding their care.

In addition to English, Dr. Abou-Samra speaks Arabic, allowing him to communicate directly with Arabic-speaking patients and families.

Frequently Asked Questions

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye care and can diagnose and treat a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma and other diseases. A Retina Specialist is an ophthalmologist who has completed additional specialized training in diagnosing and treating diseases of the retina and macula, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments. Dr. Abou-Samra completed his fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Georgetown University, giving him extensive knowledge as a retina specialist.

Most patients find that eye injections for macular degeneration are more uncomfortable than painful. Before the injection, numbing drops and medication are used to help minimize discomfort. You may feel some pressure or a brief sensation during the injection, but the procedure typically takes only a few moments. Your eye may feel irritated or gritty afterward, but this usually improves quickly.

Dr. Abou-Samra sees Retina patients at Ocala Eye’s Fenney office in Wildwood one day each week. Dr. Abou-Samra and his practice partner, Dr. Zafrullah, maintain a private Retina practice in the Tampa area and travel to The Villages once a week to provide specialized Retina care to Ocala Eye patients. This allows us to expand access to Retina services and better serve our patients and the growing Villages community.

A retinal detachment can be an emergency and requires prompt medical attention. Warning signs may include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, a dark curtain or shadow moving across your vision, or a sudden loss or change in peripheral vision. If you experience these symptoms, contact an eye care professional immediately or seek emergency eye care.
